AN AWARD FROM THE RUSSIAN FEDERAL BAR ASSOCIATION

The ceremony took place in December 2014 at the luxurious Tsereteli Art Gallery in Moscow and was attended by the heads of bar associations from all over Russia, representatives of various law companies, and guests from the Government of the Russian Federation. The award was given to Ekaterina Safonova, the head of the CECJ, for her outstanding effort in designing and developing a unique educational human rights project titled “Successful Application to the ECtHR: from Theory to Practice”.

SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION TO THE ECTHR: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE

AN INNOVATIVE IDEA. ORGANIZATION. RESULTS

The Russian Federal Bar Association award is recognition of the hard work that went into developing the unique project Successful Application to the ECtHR: from Theory to Practice. It is also recognition of our outreach efforts to inform lawyers, especially in Russia’s remote regions, where faith in effective human rights protection and the efficiency of the European Convention at the national level is often lost. Thanks to the individual, tailored approach to different Russian regions, we have been able to send regular delegations of Russian lawyers to Strasbourg. From 20 people in a Council of Europe conference room in 2011 to 200 people in 2019, each group has been larger than the previous one. A total of over 2,000 lawyers have participated in this program. Participants are provided with presentations and working materials prepared by ECtHR lawyers. They later share these materials with their colleagues or hold their own fee-based training workshops in their home cities, thus providing wider dissemination of relevant knowledge on the European Convention in Russia.

ITALY

AN AWARD FROM THE SUPREME COURT OF CASSATION OF ITALY

The medal was awarded to CECJ director Ekaterina Safonova by the President of the Italian Supreme Court of Cassation in Rome in 2013. The award recognized our excellence in organizing the international conference “Implementation of the European Convention: the experience of Italy and Russia” held in June 2012 on the premises of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation in St. Petersburg. The conference was attended by top judicial officials of Italy and Russia as well as ECtHR representatives. Following the event, we published 1,000 copies of a unique book of the conference presentations and their Italian or Russian translations. The book has served as CECJ’s contribution to the educational activities of promoting knowledge about the European Convention among the Russian and Italian legal communities.

ARGENTINA

BUENOS AIRES BAR ASSOCIATION MEDAL

The medal for the promotion of cooperation between lawyers in Argentina and Russia was awarded in Buenos Aires in September 2014 as part of the National Law of Argentina Workshop. The event’s busy agenda included discussions of various Argentine law cases with a foreign element, a visit to the Supreme Court, and meetings with sitting judges. The highlight of the program was a trip to the Casa Rosada, which included a visit to the office of President Cristina Kirchner (the 55th president of Argentina from December 10, 2007 to December 10, 2015).
